TAOS SKI VALLEY
Taos Ski Valley is located 18 miles outside of Taos, and its peak elevation reaches 11,819 ft. It was originally called Twining Valley, and was first used by miners in the 1880s, who were in search of gold and copper. The largest of these companies, Frazier Mountain Copper Company, collapsed due to bad business. After this, the gold and copper could not be separated from the ore, so most miners moved on. Pieces of this history (miner's equipment and houses) supplement your experience here along Ski Valley's hiking trails. These trails also lead to some of the highest, most magnificent peaks in New Mexico. Beginning in 1954, families acquired pieces of this land for themselves. Then, in 1955, Ernie Blake obtained the land, and began construction on Taos Ski Valley. Today, it has become the nation's leading ski school. It features extensive trails for both beginner and intermediate skiers. The Taos Ski Valley Village currently has over 100 residents, separate from the many tourists.
