TAOS PLAZA
The Taos Plaza was discovered by the Spanish, as part of Coronado's expedition of 1540. Basque explorer Don Juan Oñate was the first Spaniard, who arrived in July of 1598. He began to establish a mission in the village, as well as establishing trade with the residents. Taos then became split into two major plazas. The plaza at the heart of the village became a thriving business district, followed by a walled residential plaza a few 100yds. behind. Today the plaza is lined with gift shops and coffee shops. Throughout its history, the plaza has always been plagued by fire.
